Home CCTV Hacked: Surat Woman's Private Video Leaked

A couple in Surat is experiencing significant distress after a private video of the wife, recorded by their home CCTV system, was leaked and shared widely on social media platforms. The incident raises serious concerns about the security vulnerabilities of home surveillance systems.

Details of the Incident

The 35-year-old woman's video, showing her changing clothes, was captured by a CCTV camera installed in her bedroom. The couple had installed four cameras to monitor their six-year-old child while under the care of a babysitter.

Police Investigation

The incident, which occurred on December 2nd, was reported to the Vesu police station. Authorities have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. The leaked footage was circulated on various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Threads.

Police are investigating two potential scenarios:

  • Whether the footage was stolen through hacking.
  • Whether someone with knowledge of the camera setup and credentials shared the video.

Investigators are examining digital access logs and interviewing individuals familiar with the family and their home surveillance system.

Legal Implications

The case is registered under BNS Section 77, addressing voyeurism, which includes recording or viewing private acts without consent. Sections 66E and 67 of the IT Act have also been invoked for capturing, transmitting, and publishing obscene or private images electronically. Inspector J. I. Patel of Vesu police is leading the investigation.

Similar Incident

In a similar case, a 20-year-old woman reported that a private video with her boyfriend was leaked after they visited Galaxy Hotel in Amroli on November 24th. The video was allegedly recorded and then posted through her Instagram account and sent to family and friends.

Amroli police inspector J. B. Vanar stated that they have registered a case under the IT Act and are questioning hotel staff. Statements from the victim and her companion will be taken to determine how the footage was captured and who circulated it.
