Woman Locked Away for 20 Years in Chhattisgarh
A shocking case has emerged in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region where a woman was allegedly confined to a room for two decades by her foster family. The family claims this extreme measure was taken to "protect" her from a suspected molester.
Details of the Confinement
The woman, who is now in her 20s, was reportedly locked away when she was just eight years old. After being rescued by officials, it was discovered that she:
- Barely responds when her name is called.
- Has severely impaired eyesight.
- Appears traumatized due to years of isolation.
- Had no exposure to sunlight, open air, or social contact.
Sister Clarelit of Gharaunda Ashram at Korchuli, near Jagdalpur, is assisting with her care.
Investigation Underway
Bastar collector Harish S. told TOI that the social welfare department is investigating the situation. The investigation will focus on potential:
- Criminal negligence
- Unlawful detention
- Violation of human rights
“Officials are questioning her family members and probing the circumstances that led to such prolonged confinement... We will initiate action once the report is filed,” he said.
Family's Explanation
Sources within the department reported that the foster family claims they feared the woman would be sexually assaulted by an unidentified young man in the neighborhood. They alleged he was a habitual offender and would have targeted her if she was seen outside.
Woman's Condition and Future
Medical assessments indicate that the woman's chances of regaining full eyesight are slim. However, there is some positive news. “Good news is she is slowly learning to respond, & walk with support,” Sister Clarelit said.
Key Points
The social welfare department is treating this case with utmost seriousness and is investigating all aspects of the confinement. The woman is currently receiving care and support to help her recover from the trauma she has endured.
