Woman Attacked After Rejecting Love Proposal in Bengaluru
In Bengaluru, a 21-year-old woman (named Archana, name changed) was attacked and followed by a man she met online. The incident happened on Monday, December 22.
The police quickly acted after Archana complained. They arrested a 29-year-old man named Naveen Kumar N.
How Archana and Naveen Met
Archana moved to Bengaluru about two years ago and worked as a tele-caller. On September 30, she posted an advertisement for her job on Instagram.
Naveen Kumar saw her post and replied. After talking on Instagram for some days, they shared their phone numbers. Naveen then started calling and messaging her a lot. They also met often.
Harassment Begins
For the first three months, Naveen was friendly. But then, Archana said he started forcing her to accept his love. She told him many times that she was not interested, but he did not stop.
Archana said Naveen kept bothering her and following her everywhere:
- He followed her when she left her home (paying guest or PG).
- He followed her when she left her workplace.
- He tracked where she went.
Because of this constant harassment, Archana quit her job and moved to a different PG. But Naveen still followed her there. She said he yelled at her and hit her many times.
The Main Attack
On December 22, around 3:20 PM, Archana left her PG with a friend on a scooter. Naveen stopped them with his car. He then attacked Archana, hitting her on her head, back, and neck. She also said he tried to tear her clothes.
Archana immediately called the police emergency number 112. But Naveen ran away before the police arrived.
Police Action and Charges
Based on Archana's complaint, the police registered a case. Naveen Kumar was arrested very soon after.
He faces several charges under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita law, including:
- Assaulting a woman to insult her modesty
- Sexual harassment
- Assaulting a woman to undress her
- Stalking
- Insulting a woman's modesty with words or actions
- Threatening someone criminally
What Naveen Kumar Said
During questioning, Naveen said that they fell in love after meeting on Instagram. He claimed they later had arguments. He told the police that Archana blocked his phone number and social media accounts, which made him angry.
He said he went to her PG to talk, and when she refused, he attacked her in anger.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Anitha B. Haddannavar stated that Naveen was arrested within 24 hours. The police are still investigating the case.
