Customer Frustration: Woman Sets E-Rickshaw Ablaze in Shivpuri

A recent incident in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, highlights the growing concerns over consumer rights and after-sales support in the automobile sector. A woman, reportedly fed up with a continuously malfunctioning electric rickshaw and alleged lack of assistance from the dealership, took the drastic step of setting her own vehicle on fire in public view.

Why the Extreme Step? A Family's Struggle for Income

The individual involved, identified as Gudiya Mahaur from Fakkar Colony, Shivpuri, shared her distressing story. She and her husband, Narayan Mahaur, work as daily wage laborers and are responsible for three children. Approximately six months ago, they invested heavily in an e-rickshaw, purchasing it for around Rs 2.3 lakh through financing. Their hope was that this new electric vehicle would provide a stable income source, lifting them out of the daily struggle for wages.

However, their aspirations quickly turned into a nightmare. According to Gudiya, the e-rickshaw began experiencing serious operational issues within just two months of purchase, eventually becoming completely unusable. She claims that for the past four months, despite repeated visits, the dealership refused to carry out necessary repairs, leaving her with a significant financial burden and no means of earning.

Public Protest: The Fiery Incident

On Friday, driven by immense frustration and a feeling of helplessness, Gudiya Mahaur brought her defective e-rickshaw to the area outside the automobile showroom in the Kotwali police station jurisdiction. In a shocking display of protest, she doused the vehicle with petrol and set it ablaze. The dramatic event unfolded in full public view, attracting immediate attention.

Police Intervention and Ongoing Investigation

Upon receiving information about the incident, local police promptly arrived at the scene. They intervened, bringing both Gudiya Mahaur and the charred remains of the e-rickshaw to the police station to initiate a formal complaint process. Authorities have confirmed they are thoroughly investigating the matter.

Gudiya Mahaur has a clear demand: the agency must either fully repair her e-rickshaw or provide a brand-new replacement. Failing that, she insists on a complete refund of the money paid so far for the vehicle.

Dealership's Counter-Claim

The agency, in response to media inquiries, has denied any wrongdoing on their part. They claim that the e-rickshaw's battery had burst, rendering the vehicle beyond repair. Furthermore, they stated that the customer was advised to install a new battery but declined to do so. The company maintains that its policy does not cover replacements in cases of battery explosions.

What Happens Next?

Police officials have confirmed that they are actively recording statements from both the customer and the dealership. As part of their comprehensive inquiry, they are also examining crucial documents, including:

  • Purchase documents for the e-rickshaw
  • Warranty conditions provided at the time of sale
  • Service records detailing any previous repair attempts or complaints

Further action will be determined once the investigation is complete, ensuring a fair assessment of the claims from both sides in this challenging consumer dispute.
