National Herald Case: New FIR Triggers Political Spat

A fresh FIR in the National Herald case, involving Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, has ignited a fierce exchange between the BJP and the Congress party. The Congress has decried the FIR as a politically motivated attack, while the BJP alleges financial impropriety.

Congress Accuses BJP of Vendetta

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh dismissed the FIR as "bogus," accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating a vendetta against the party's leadership. Ramesh asserted that the case is a form of "harassment, intimidation, and vendetta" and that justice will prevail.

BJP Alleges "Clear Loot"

BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad countered, stating the case dates back to 2008 and involves financial transactions of Associated Journals Ltd (AJL), the publisher of National Herald. He outlined the BJP's allegations:

  • AJL had a loan of approximately Rs 90 crore from the Congress party.
  • The shares of AJL were then acquired for only Rs 50 lakh through a new company, Young India Ltd.
  • After the loan was waived, Young India Ltd., in which Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi held a 76 percent share, gained control of all shares of AJL.

Prasad characterized this sequence of events as "a clear case of loot."

Congress Defends Transactions

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi defended the transactions on X, stating the FIR is nothing new. He argued that no money laundering occurred because no money moved, and no immovable property was transferred. He added that Young Indian was created as a not-for-profit company to hold shares of AJL, which continues to own the National Herald brand and properties. He claims a condition precedent of money laundering (movement of money and conversion of unaccounted to white money) is absent.

Key Players and Allegations

Here's a summary of the key players and allegations involved:

Party Allegation/Defense
BJP Accuses Congress leaders of financial impropriety and "loot" in the acquisition of Associated Journals Ltd. through Young India Ltd.
Congress Denies any wrongdoing, calling the FIR a politically motivated vendetta and asserting that no money laundering occurred.

The National Herald case continues to be a contentious issue, with both parties presenting conflicting narratives and accusations.
