New terminal inaugurated at Guwahati airport
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati. He had earlier shared pictures of the terminal, calling it a major upgrade for Assam’s infrastructure.
Boost for travel, tourism, and business
The Prime Minister said the new terminal will improve ease of living for passengers and support commerce and tourism in the region. He described the project as an important step for better connectivity and economic growth in Assam.
Large capacity and modern design
According to official details, the new integrated terminal covers about 1.4 lakh square metres and can handle up to 1.3 crore passengers every year. This expansion is expected to strengthen Assam’s links with the rest of India and the world.
India’s first nature-themed airport terminal
The Guwahati airport terminal is India’s first nature-themed airport. It is designed around the idea of “Bamboo Orchids”, reflecting Assam’s rich natural beauty and culture.
Inspired by Assam’s heritage
The terminal uses around 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo from the Northeast. Its design includes:
- Green landscapes inspired by Kaziranga National Park
- Traditional japi patterns
- The rhino symbol
- 57 orchid-style columns inspired by the kopou flower
Unique ‘Sky Forest’ feature
A major highlight of the terminal is the “Sky Forest”, which contains nearly one lakh native plants. This area is designed to give travelers a calm, forest-like experience inside the airport.
Better passenger experience with modern technology
The new terminal includes several advanced facilities to make travel smoother and faster:
- Full-body scanners for quicker security checks
- DigiYatra for contactless entry and movement
- Automated baggage handling systems
- Fast-track immigration counters
- AI-based systems for safe and efficient operations
Step forward for Assam’s development
The new Guwahati airport terminal is seen as a major step toward improving connectivity, tourism, and economic development in Assam and the Northeast region.
