Naseem Shah: My Journey Through Cricket, Injuries, and Facing Criticism
Starting Young and Facing Pressure
Naseem Shah, a young fast bowler, began playing international cricket very early in his life. He quickly found himself in tough, high-pressure games. Looking back, he believes this early experience was good for him. He says it helped him learn and grow faster as a cricketer, even though he didn't understand everything at the start.
The Challenge of Injuries for Fast Bowlers
Naseem has faced many injuries during his career. He explains that injuries are a normal part of a fast bowler's life, no matter how fit you are. It is very hard to come back after an injury and get back to your best. He shared the difficult steps of recovery:
- First, you must fight the injury itself and heal it.
- Then, you need to regain your fitness and strength.
- Finally, you have to play matches to get back your rhythm and top performance.
He says injuries teach you a lot and make you mentally stronger. He also noted that many fans don't understand the different types of injuries or how hard it is to recover.
Is it Harder to Recover from Injury or Bad Form?
Naseem believes that recovering from bad form is easier than recovering from an injury. He explains:
- If you are out of form, your fitness is usually still good. You might just be one good game away from getting back on track.
- However, an injury stops your cricket completely. It takes much more time and effort to regain your physical strength and bowling rhythm.
Bowlers' Struggles in T20 Cricket
In today's T20 cricket, everything seems to favor batters. Pitches are made for high scores, and fans want to see many runs. This can be tough for bowlers.
Naseem says that bowlers must be smart and perform their best even when conditions are against them. While an economy rate under 9 runs per over might not seem great to fans, coaches understand its value on high-scoring pitches. Bowlers have to work extra hard to succeed and give their best performance in this batter-friendly game.
Dealing with High Expectations and Criticism
Playing for countries like India or Pakistan brings huge expectations, especially in big matches. Naseem finds it fun, but also a source of pressure. He knows that if he plays well, he gets love, but if not, there are many jokes and criticism. He says you must be mentally ready for both.
Criticism from Fans vs. Former Players
Naseem makes a clear difference between criticism from fans and from former cricketers:
- Fans: He says fans often don't truly understand the game because many have "never held a cricket ball or visited a cricket ground." He advises not to take their words to heart, as they are just showing their emotions. You cannot control what everyone says on their phones.
- Former Players: He respects criticism from former players who have played the game. He listens and learns from them. However, he ignores any criticism that feels unfair or personal, or if it's not truly about cricket.
He believes that as a professional cricketer, you must learn to handle criticism and not let it affect you, especially in today's world where everyone can share their opinions online. You must be strong and focus on your game.
Naseem's Current Outlook
Naseem Shah is currently playing for the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 tournament in the UAE. He is in a good place, having taken five wickets from five matches and helping his team win many games. He continues to learn and improve, believing that a professional player must always strive to get better until the very last ball of their career.
