New Delhi, India โ€“ In a significant move to strengthen global technological independence and secure crucial supply chains, India has officially become a member of the US-led Pax Silica initiative. This strategic partnership aims to counter the growing influence of certain nations in critical technology sectors, particularly concerning artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor supply chains.

India's Entry into Pax Silica: A Strategic Alliance

On Friday, India formally endorsed the Pax Silica initiative, a key US program focused on AI and the security of supply chains. This collaboration is widely seen as a vital step to balance global power dynamics in critical technological areas.

US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, warmly welcomed India into the alliance. He highlighted that this coalition, which includes some of America's closest allies and trusted partners, is fundamentally about ensuring that "free societies maintain control over the leading edges of the global economy". This initiative, Gor noted, will be crucial in shaping the economic and technological landscape of the 21st century.

Shared Vision for Liberty and Prosperity

During the event in New Delhi, several key figures, including India's Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, US Ambassador Sergio Gor, and US Undersecretary for Economic Growth, Jacob Helberg, were present. Alongside signing the main Pax Silica Declaration, a supplementary joint statement was also issued.

This joint statement emphasized that the partnership signals a new era where the world's oldest and largest democracies are united. Their alignment is not just about defending freedom but also about actively pursuing prosperity and harmony for their citizens. The statement further affirmed their shared goal to build an AI future that:

  • Serves their respective populations.
  • Strengthens their economies and societies.
  • Reflects their common values of freedom, transparency, and the rule of law.

India's Strength and Contribution

Ambassador Gor underscored the strategic importance of India's participation, stating, "India's entry into Pax Silica isn't just symbolic, it's strategic, it's essential." He praised India's vast talent pool, describing it as deep enough to compete with any global challenger. Gor, who had invited India to join the initiative on his first day in office last month, noted that the coalition now comprises 11 members.

India brings considerable strength to the alliance, particularly its extensive engineering capabilities and its capacity for processing critical minerals. These attributes provide vital support to the partnership. Ambassador Gor stressed that true peace comes from strength, not from hoping adversaries will act fairly. He remarked, "India understands this. India understands strong borders... That strength, that sovereignty, is exactly what Pax Silica amplifies." Discussions are ongoing regarding the development of resilient supply chains that cannot be easily disrupted.

Tackling Global Challenges Together

The Pax Silica Declaration outlines efforts to reduce excessive reliance on single sources and to establish new connections with reliable partners who uphold fair market practices. It also acknowledges the critical need to address unfair market behaviors that hinder innovation and competition.

Ambassador Gor highlighted the initiative's core question: whether innovation will flourish in places like Bengaluru and Silicon Valley, or in authoritarian states that use technology for surveillance and control over their citizens. "We choose freedom. We choose partnership. We choose strength. And today, with India's entry into Pax Silica, we choose to win," he declared.

Deepening Bilateral Ties and Future-Ready Solutions

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that cooperation under Pax Silica will further deepen engagement on critical technologies and enhance supply chain resilience, aligning with the broader India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) echoed this sentiment, stating that technology collaboration remains a central pillar of the India-US partnership. India's decision to join Pax Silica marks a significant stride in boosting bilateral cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, reinforcing both nations' commitment to building robust, trustworthy, and future-ready supply chains.
