India's Election Commission (EC) is reportedly poised to reveal the comprehensive election schedule for assembly polls across five significant states and union territories later today. A press briefing is anticipated at 4:00 PM, where the much-awaited polling dates for West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry will be formally announced, as per reports from news agency ANI.
Electoral Roll Deadlines and Voter Preparedness
This upcoming announcement aligns with a critical deadline: the final day for submitting objections to West Bengal's recently published electoral roll. This roll, made public on February 28, lists an impressive 6.4 crore eligible voters. Meanwhile, the period for appealing against the final voter lists in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry has already concluded, indicating readiness for the electoral process in these regions.
Fewer Phases, Enhanced Security: EC's Strategy
Sources suggest that these upcoming state elections might see a reduced number of polling phases compared to the 2021 elections. Back then, West Bengal experienced voting over eight phases, Assam three, while Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry completed their polls in a single phase. To achieve a more condensed election timeline, the EC plans a significant surge in the deployment of central forces, particularly focusing on West Bengal election security.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the total strength of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) could exceed the 1,500 companies (approximately 1.4 lakh personnel) allocated for the 2024 Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections. Notably, around 500 companies, comprising 45,000 personnel, are already in West Bengal for advance deployment, underscoring the EC's commitment to robust election security arrangements.
Polling Patterns and West Bengal's Extended Voting Period
It is widely anticipated that both West Bengal and Assam will experience multi-phase polling, reflecting their larger electoral landscapes. Conversely, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry are expected to hold their assembly polls in a single phase. Following the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court's directive, supplementary voter lists, including all approved cases, will be released to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
