Major travel disruptions have hit flights connecting India and the United Arab Emirates, especially Dubai. Both Air India and IndiGo have announced significant changes to their schedules, including numerous cancellations and reschedules. This comes as the ongoing situation in West Asia leads to increased operational limitations across the region.
Air India and Air India Express Face Extensive Cancellations
Air India revealed on social media platform X that UAE airport authorities have instructed airlines to reduce their operations. As a direct result, Air India and its subsidiary, Air India Express, have been forced to significantly cut down their special flights planned for March 15, 2026.
Key Flight Reductions for March 15, 2026:
- Air India: Out of five scheduled flights to Dubai, only one Delhi-Dubai return service will operate. Four flights have been cancelled.
- Air India Express: Only one Delhi-Dubai return flight will run. Five out of six planned Dubai flights are cancelled.
- Abu Dhabi: All five Air India Express flights to Abu Dhabi stand cancelled for the day.
Despite these widespread cancellations, Air India Express has confirmed plans to continue flights from Sharjah to various Indian cities, including Delhi, Kannur, Kochi, Kozhikode, Mumbai, and Thiruvananthapuram. Additionally, services between Ras Al Khaimah and Kozhikode, as well as Ras Al Khaimah and Kochi, are intended to operate, depending on flight slot availability and current operational conditions.
Options for Affected Passengers:
Passengers whose flights have been cancelled can either:
- Rebook their tickets for a future date without any extra charges.
- Request a full refund for their booking.
IndiGo Also Announces Dubai Flight Schedule Changes
Budget carrier IndiGo has also informed its passengers about further restrictions on flight operations in Dubai. The airline posted an update on X, stating, "Due to the evolving situation in the Middle East, flight operations have been further restricted in Dubai, leading to changes in flight schedules."
IndiGo has advised all customers planning to travel to or from Dubai to verify their flight status before heading to the airport. The airline is also sending out direct notifications to keep passengers informed of the latest developments.
Wider Impact of West Asia Crisis on Aviation Sector
These recent flight adjustments are part of broader challenges facing the aviation industry due to the escalating West Asia crisis. This regional instability has not only impacted flight schedules but has also led to a significant increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
Rising Fuel Costs Lead to Surcharges:
To cope with the growing operational expenses linked to higher fuel prices, several airlines have recently introduced fuel surcharges. Major carriers like IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air have implemented these additional fees on both their domestic and international routes, reflecting the economic pressures on the sector.
